In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.

punk e: why wouldn't this be a song to listen to when you're happy to be a live. i agree that it's about giving up one life for a chance at another. But hey, in the song everything turns out all right. It's an inspiration that he risked everything for happiness, kinda makes me bitching about going to work on friday night seem pointless. It's a song that can make you feel good inside.
ACTUALLY this song sounds more like someone giving up everything for their dreams, being extremely happy to be fufilling them, and then learning that someone that was close to them/that they loved commit suicide (I'm still waiting for someone, to call me up and tell me your dead) It sounds more like an upbeat song to keep your mind off of the negatives about it.
i dont think it has anything to do with suicide, i think its more like, the fact that the person is reciprocating love, is so unreal, youre waiting for truth to set in, cos it couldnt be that good. "im still waiting for the world to come cradhing down again, and im still waiting for someone to call me up and tell me your dead" meaning that its so incredible that everythings going your way for once that it cant be real, and that it'll prolly end any second. well, thats how i take it anyway.
The song to me is about leaving the crappy life you knew and had one day, and moving as far away as possible and feeling great with what you have now. so its relating to the line "2o0o miles from all i know, but so much better off today." i think the song is excellent and the lyrics relate to alot of people.
i like the part about "i was sick of feeling down, so i gave it all away" it really seems to tell people that just feeling sorry for themselves will not improve their situation. if they wanna be happy and have a fun life then they need to go out and have a great attitude and just love the world. i have recently discovered how great it makes me feel just to give someone a hug and tell them that i love them. seeing my friend with her boyfriend no longer makes me feel insanely jealous but it makes me feel great to see love and happiness love and peace ~allison

"...and it must have been something really bad if he wishes that person were dead...but in the end he just got away from it all and is much happier now...but personally..i think its a great song...regaudless of how you interpret it...
