The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. This song is great because it's simple, and it's sweet.
He basically meant that while he doesn't have much, a borrowed bike, a torn cloak, a pet mouse, some cookies, music,etc. He cares about her enough to share all that he has. He wants to be able to get to know this girl. The only way he can do that is by bringing her into his world.

This song is just so funny. I love it for it's quirkiness and uniqueness. It really seems to have not much of a point whatsoever, except for perhaps the chorus. The chorus really does not fit, but I love it still. In short...good funny song.
Ok, I really love this song. Until recently I just thought it was really random and stuff, but I was listening to it the other day and had an idea that made sense to me, it's probably wrong but I'm not bothered. I know it aint traditional for Floyd, but it sounds like kinda a love song? Like the guy is saying he doesn't have much, but what he's got the girl can have too. I know I'm wrong, it's just an opinion. And I love the fact that it's so English too.

i found this song to be somewhat of a "lovesong" in a way,cause no matter how screwed up the subject or whatever it is he's singing about the chorus is simple,
