You moved like honey
In my dream last night
Yeah, some old fires were burning
You came near to me
And you endeared to me
But you couldn't quite discern me

Does that scare you?
I'll let you run away
But your heart will not oblige you
You'll remember me like a melody
Yeah, I'll haunt the world inside you
And my big secret
Gonna win you over
Slow like honey
Heavy with mood

I'll let you see me
I'll covet your regard
I'll invade your demeanor
And you'll yield to me
Like a scent in the breeze
And you'll wonder
What it is about me
It's my big secret
Keeping you coming
Slow like honey
Heavy with mood

Ah...

Though dreams can be deceiving
Like faces are to hearts
They serve for sweet relieving
When fantasy and reality
Lie too far apart

So I stretch myself across like a bridge
And I pull you to the edge
And stand there waiting
Trying to attain
The end to satisfy the story
Shall I release you?
Must I release you
As I rise to meet my glory?

But my big secret
Gonna hover over your life
Gonna keep you reaching
When I'm gone like yesterday
When I'm high like heaven
When I'm strong like music
'Cause I'm slow like honey
And heavy with mood...

Slow Like Honey was the first song Fiona wrote for Tidal. In the song, Fiona speaks of her "big secret." She has explained it as being in reference to the way other students viewed her during high school. It was Fiona's response to the question of "What's the big secret?" Apple: "When I was in high school a lot of guys didn't... a lot of guys always... this is what I heard the most -- okay... 'What the hell are you thinking?' 'What are you thinking about?' 'God, you're always staring off into space.' And, like, no one would come near me because of that and I think that people think that if you're silent then you're like, snobby or something, you know? Or you're depressed. You know? I was just contemplative. What can I say?" She has also said that this song is about how she would become a singer and all of her classmates would regret being mean to her because she became famous and hence, has power over them.

I SO LOVE THIS PART! It's a great metaphor and I definately knows what she means. Isn't it awesome how she doesn't only make great music, but great lyrics as well? And not only has she written it all herself, she can preform her songs live and it still sounds GREAT!!! (and that's just something you can't say about most artists nowadays, don't ya think?)

    FIONA ROCKS! :D

Could it be that the 'secret' is that fiona is just playing with this boy - and he's well and truly fooled? ('dreams can be decieving like faces are to hearts') Its a game 'fantasy and reality lie too far apart'.

    Song Meaning

I believe this song in all it's eloquence and double entendre's and beautiful composition is about the opposite of what words are being said. In meaning; the song is saying 'Hey lover you were in my dream last night and old feelings were there which scared you, but you couldn't get away because your heart wouldn't let you because you love me still,- in fact you can't forget me like a song stuck in your head. You had to give yourself over to me because anything else would be futile like a scent trying to stay put in the wind.' But then the song takes a turn and starts to admit to audience (and it's own author) that dreams aren't necessarily the truth, and often they lie to protect us by making people play opposite roles including you yourself in a dream. In this case it is Fiona who is the one haunted by a love(r) her heart cannot let go of that is gone. And because this hurts her so much she assumes the opposite power role in the dream of the "haunter." This dream is her 'fantasy', -reality is the opposite of the words being said. Also sometimes we realize when we are dreaming part way through, that we are dreaming, I believe the next lyrics are Fiona's decision to continue to be the victor in the dream by stretching herself 'across like a bridge' to pull him to her-but now she is faced with how to continue this 'story'. She thinks to herself does she has to let him go?, but as soon as she states that in a question she immediately avoids it all together and continues with her 'relieving' fantasy as the victor not the victim and proclaims with the confidence she wishes she had, she says quite strongly ('like music') that it's her big secret (all along) that she's going to haunt him forever and he will never forget her and always be wanting her even though it will NEVER happen because it's over between them; she's (he really is) 'gone like yesterday.' and so this IS a song/feeling/dream that is very long, slow and 'heavy with mood.' Sad and happy in a brilliant balance of fantasy and reality that dreams are infamous conductors for. I feel it Fiona. I really do.

Such a sultry, sexy song. I love it. I especially like the part at the end when she says--

when i'm gone like yesterday/when i'm high like heaven/when i'm strong like music/cause i'm slow like honey, and heavy with mood

I admit when i first got Tidal, Slow like honey wasnt one of my favourite songs. But after a few more intense listenings, i started to appreciate the slow piano, Fiona's spectacularly lilting vocals which seem to aggressively become stronger and stronger in this song, Especially the "Though dreams can be deceiving.." part. Kudo's to Fiona for being such an excellent artiste and putting people like Vanessa Carlton to shame. Fiona is GOD!

i sense sarcasm, or bitterness. i'm not sure what exactly, but she doesn't exactly seem so sure of herself when she is speaking of winning someone back, making them stay with her (and she speaks of this in a somewhat apathetic tone, like she wouldn't mind either way).

and also there are the lines, "Though dreams can be deceiving like faces are to hearts They serve for sweet relieving when fantasy and reality lie too far apart"

that is the part where i stop believing she is speaking of his feelings and not her own.

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

Cajun Girl
Little Feat
Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

American Town
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
