You're beautiful and that's for sure
You'll never ever fade
You're lovely, but it's not for sure
That I won't ever change

And though my love is rare
And though my love is true

I'm like a bird
I'll only fly away
I don't know where my soul is (soul is)
I don't know where my home is
And baby, all I need for you to know is
I'm like a bird
I'll only fly away
I don't know where my soul is (soul is)
I don't know where my home is
All I need for you to know is

Your faith in me brings me to tears (ah)
Even after all these years, years
And it pains me so much to tell
That you don't know me that well

And though my love is rare
And though my love is true

I'm like a bird
I'll only fly away
I don't know where my soul is (soul is)
I don't know where my home is
And baby, all I need for you to know is
I'm like a bird
I'll only fly away (fly away)
I don't know where my soul is (soul is)
I don't know where my home is
And baby, all I need for you to know is

It's not that I wanna say goodbye
It's just that every time you try
To tell me, me that you love me (oh, oh)
Each and every single day
I know I'm gonna have to eventually give you away, yeah

And though my love is rare, rare, rare
And though my love is true, yeah
Hey, I'm just scared
That we may fall through
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

I'm like a bird (I'm like a bird)
I don't know where my soul is (soul is)
I don't know where my home is
And baby, all I need for you to know is
I'm like a bird
I'll only fly away (fly away)
I don't know where my soul is (soul is)
I don't know where my home is
And baby, all I need for you to know is
I'm like a bird
I'll only fly away (and I don't know where my soul is)
I don't know where my soul is (soul is)
I don't know where my home is
And baby, all I need for you to know is
I'm like a bird
I'll only fly away (I don't know where my home is)
I don't know where my soul is (soul is)
I don't know where my home is
And baby, all I need for you to know is
I'm like a bird
I'll only fly away
I don't know where my soul is (soul is)
I don't know where my home is
And baby, all I need for you to know is
I'm like a bird
I'll only fly away
I don't know where my soul is (soul is)
I don't know where my home is
And baby, all I need for you to know is
I'm like a bird

    Song Meaning

All of you guys are RETARDED.

This song is about what most normal people DO. Nothing ever lasts, whether it is good or bad. People go through bad times in their life and you have to be strong enough to get through it or else you will get swallowed by it, right? Right. So what about the good things? Of course they pass too because, overall, change is meant to come into your life for you to know what "living" feels like. If everything stayed perfect, then nothing would be perfect because it would be the same sh** everyday, all the time. That, my friends, is when the bad comes in. You get bored, or try to force something to work that is just not working anymore, therefore you get angry, upset, etc etc. WHICH IS WHY THIS SONG IS SO PERFECT.

    LYRIC BREAKDOWN

"you're beautiful, that's for sure. You'll never ever fade" -someone's own individuality, when they're not hiding who they really are, is truly beautiful and unique (You're Beautiful, That's For Sure). there's no one person who is exactly the same, you can never change or "fix" who you really are bcs that's how you were born (You'll never ever fade) "you're lovely, but that's not forsure. I won't ever change" -basically saying 'yes, you're lovely RIGHT NOW, but I'm not changing myself for you so will you still be lovely when you come to that realization?' "though my love is rare, though my love is true.. I'm like a bird, I'll only fly away. I don't know where my soul is.. I don't know where my home is. And baby all I need for you to know is.." -when you finally meet that someone you just have absolutely unconditional love for, you KNOW it. No games, or any of that BS. It's real true love and whether you believe it or not, it only happens very rarely. But nothing ever lasts, doors close so that others can open. things die so that more things can grow. she's just being honest... there will come a time where she will have to leave. most likely because the other person will not have the strength to do so. "Your faith in me brings me to tears Even after all these years And it pains me so much to tell That you don't know me that well And though my love is rare Though my love is true...CHORUS" -its heart breaking to see someone you love, not letting go of something that is leaving them. you can't force something to work when it's not working, you will only make it worse, thus ruining it even more. at that point you just become two totally different people, it's hard to have even a normal friendship like before, after having that much pain in trying to hold onto it all.. "It's not that I wanna say goodbye It's just that every time you try to tell me that you love me Each and every single day I know I'm going to have to eventually give you away And though my love is rare And though my love is true Hey I'm just scared That we may fall through" -Ofcourse you don't want to say goodbye.. you never want something good to end, that's why there's so much pain after it (bad times) because you cannot control something outside of yourself. you can't control nature. she knows it's coming to an end (or WILL come to its end) and even though the "I-love-you's" are exchanged, she knows not to get to tangled into their shit bcs it'll only be harder in the end for herself when she has to leave the relationship. She's scared of getting too close, bcs of the risk of it all falling through if she loses herself in it.

This song is amazing, it's so true.

I think she is trying to find who she really is. She pictures herself as a bird, a symbol for freedom. The person she is talkng to/about she feels is empty. All the care is about looks, yet she's trying to fit in and she is losing her true self (where's my soul is). I love this song, because it helps state who I really am inside and out.

Every now and again a song like this comes along - an absolute gem! A soul lost between the ties of love and a desire for freedom. It's heart rending stuff and she sings it so. Brilliant! Classic! Genius! I love you for this, Nelly.

I think the key to this whole song is "I'm just scared That we may fall through". It may seem like she's strong, willing to give up something that she loves, it may seem like she's free. But really her whole desire to flee is born out of fear, fear that if she stays then she will be let down and hurt. And in that way "[his] faith in me brings [her] to tears" because she can't match it. It's like a constant reminder that she hasn't opened herself up fully "That you don't know me that well". She knows that she loves him, but she's not willing to open herself up, for fear of being rejected perhaps not now but at some point. She knows that once the fear gets the better of her she will run. It's a beautiful song from a great artist.

this is a song abt soul-searching and the love that she once had. she thought she had the ultimate love and understanding of this guy but he himself lack self-awareness, hence it is impossible for him to complement the girl. interestingly, she says 'some day i'll have to give you away'. she is, already, portending the future. she is realistic. and it is this strong sense of realism and pessimism that conflicts her want for freedom and the urge to find herself. no doubt the tune and all renders this song a happy, delightful one. nonetheless, the lyrics have strong undertones of instability, fear, insecurity and uncertainty.

What about the girl who never fall in actual love just in like like if you know what I mean. Like she likes or do get crushes and tons of them. On boys and girls, I get crushes on people basically. And there's something uniquely unappealing about feeling obsessively wanted for that kind of certain person I like. I don't want to ruined any meaningful friendship. Is't weird for that kind of girl? wait whut. Okay im only sixteen and its just my thoughts bye haha.

another song that will always make me think of someone. My friend was visiting from Colorado. The day she was leaving we took her to the bus that would take her to the airport. SHe was on the bus and it wasn't leaving for like 5 mins....but she was starting at us looking so sad...i started singing this song...and I was belting out the lyrics with my two friends behind me as back up singers/dancers...and everyone on the bus staring at us like we were freaks. Memories :)

This song describes all of us, I think. We are all trying to find ourselves, and sometimes we get sidetracked or hindered by someone we know we shouldn't fall in love with but do anyway. And even though we know it won't last, we have fun, but there's always that little voice telling us to move on.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
