This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,
I do believe in you
And I know you believe in me
Oh yeah
Oh yeah
But now we realize
Love's not all that it's supposed to be
Oh yeah
Oh yeah
And knowing that you would have wanted it this way
I do believe I'm feelin' stronger every day
I know we really tried
Together we had love inside
Oh yeah
Oh yeah
So now the time has come
For both of us to live on the run
Oh yeah
Oh yeah
And knowing that you would have wanted it this way
I do believe I'm feelin' stronger every day
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Oh
After what you've meant to me
Ooh, baby now
I can make it easily
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I know that we both agree
Best thing to happen to you
The best thing that happened to me
Yeah, yeah, yeah
(We love you)
(We love you) (let's spend the night together)
(We love you) (Jumpin' Jack Flash, it's a gas, gas, gas)
Feelin' stronger every day
Feelin' stronger every day
Feelin' stronger every day (you know I'm alright now)
Feelin' stronger every day (you know I'm alright now)
Feelin' stronger every day (you know I'm alright now)
Feelin' stronger every day (you know I'm alright now)
Feelin' stronger every day (you know I'm alright now)
Feelin' stronger every day (you know I'm alright now)
Feelin' stronger every day (you know I'm alright now)
Feelin' stronger every day (you know I'm alright now)
Feelin' stronger every day (you know I'm alright now)
Feelin' stronger every day
And I know you believe in me
Oh yeah
Oh yeah
But now we realize
Love's not all that it's supposed to be

I think this is the strongest track off of the sixth album. This is a song that before, I never gave much of a glance, but after listening to it by chance, I fell in love with it.
It means that after the inevitable breakup (too good to be true) that both parties move on and wish each other the best of lives. Never forget the person but carry on and live and love again. Remember the sweet memories and "get stronger everyday!"
It's about a guy who goes through a breakup and decides to be friends with his ex and he's Feelin' Stronger Every Day!
This is one of my favorite songs! I really love the lyrics. I've heard this song when I was on a trip on the radio a couple times and I've been trying to find out the title and artist of it for a long time! What is this song about?
Well, in my humble opinion this song is about a relationship that has broken. It's about a couple that felt that being in separate ways their lives could be better. It's about how a relationship must end (I wish all my relationship could end this way), and how the first person (the one who sings it) feels, even if it hurts (being separated) he feels stronger every day. But... how about her? does she feel the same?
I'd say the other half in the breakup is doing well, or he would have wished her well in the song. Besides, he says "the best thing that happened to you is the best thing that happened to me" and "knowing you would have wanted it this way... stronger every day" says that she moved on before he did. I think this song is to reassure the other person that their relationship had as much meaning to him as it did to her, and that she should no longer worry about him because he's getting better.
Alot of "believin'" in this song.lol
Background Info: She was a senior and i was a sophomore (highschool). We were together for 7 months. 6 days after our 7 months she asked for a break. I agreed because I automatically thought it was over. On the 23rd it ended.
This song is my NEW jam. Our song used to be as long as Niagara Falls. We even saw Chicago live. As much as I would like to say that we might get back together I just cant think like that. She has me so confused saying how she doesn't know what she wants and doesn't know if she made the right choice (breaking up). She asked for a break but I never gave it to her. After my homecoming if I still feel for her I am going to ask her back out but so far I'm "Feeling stronger every day"
I agree with the last comment that's really close to the meaning as best as I can figure it out. I've been listening to this song since 1973 I was 13 skip ahead to 2001 my wife and I split and we went our separate ways to a point we made a pact right then and there that our marriage will not end and we will always be friends and we will move on and and take our separate lives in different directions skip ahead 2016 November 15th the day she came back to me and she became mine once again for all of eternity of time never ending skip ahead again toowhen I do not know we will be dancing Cheek to Cheek once again getting back to the song that song I fell in love with it the first time I heard it 43 years ago never in a million years did I dream that I would be living it and in closing any Chicago album would bring the house down let me tell you
