I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

i love the finale! it gives the whole play a great sense of closure, when all zillion tunes and themes introduced throughout hte show all come together in harmony. the first time i heard it i was totally shocked...cuz he basically takes random songs that dont sound like theyd go together and shoves them together and it SOUNDS GOOD. its beautiful. so happy:)
This song (along with the rest of RENT) makes me so extremely sad that Jonathan Larson isn't still with us. His lyrics, his melodies, his harmonies...everything is so ingenious, especially the way it all fits together. This song is the perfect ending because it has just enough hope in it to keep us going without sounding the least bit cheesy. pure genious.
The song is beautiful. All the melodies from the shows, the idea of Roger and Mimi ending up togerther, it's all great.
But plot wise, it isn't for Rent. While musically I love this song, I don't like it as an ending. The entire theme of the show is "No day but today" as in no second chances, yet Mimi comes back? They should have let her stay dead to really get the message across. However if I somehow got to change it, I'd still keep this it. It's just too beautiful. And we don't really know if Mimi is really going to stay alive. She does have AIDS, so there's only so much life in her. And seeing it in the show, with Angel running back to the rest of the cast, is just amazing.
Well, Liztomaz, in La bohème, the Puccini opera upon which Rent was loosely based, Mimì does die—and the character than Angel is based on, Schaunard, lives.<br /> <br /> Amazing song, though. Larson went far too soon.
Liztomaz, the whole point in what Rent was about WAS "No day but today", but as I've heard in the commentary when I was watching the movie on DVD, Larson didn't want to end it with a death, he wanted it to end in happiness and life. I find that a feasible reason why Mimi lives.

I'm glad Mimi didn't end up dying. When I listened to La Bohéme, I was devastated when poor Mimi died. I think her living in RENT just gives a flicker of hope to those who've watched it. I think instead of leaving the show saddened, you instead leave feeling inspired. No day but today, right?
