In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
"Are you the guys on the beach that hate everything?"
"Is this some sort of hip music that I don't understand?"
I hate the rain and sunny weather
And I, I hate the beach and mountains too
And I don't like a thing about the city, no, no
And I, I, I, hate the country side too
And I hate everything about you
Everything about you
I don't like a thing about your mother
And I, I hate your daddy's guts too
I don't like a thing about your sister, no, no
'Cause I, I, I, think sex is overrated too
And I get sick when I'm around
I can't stand to be around
I hate everything about you
Everything about you, everything about you
Everything about you
Some say I got a bad attitude
But that don't change the way I feel about you
If you think all this might be bringing me down
Look again cause I ain't wearin' no frown
I don't really care about your sister
Forget the little bitch 'cause I already kissed her
One thing that I did to your lady
Put her on the bed and she didn't say maybe
I know you know everybody knows
The way it comes, the way it gonna go
You think it's sad well that's too bad
'Cause I'm havin' a ball and never cared a thing about
You
Everything about you, everything about you
I get sick when I'm around
I can't stand to be around
I hate everything about you
"Is this some sort of hip music that I don't understand?"
I hate the rain and sunny weather
And I, I hate the beach and mountains too
And I don't like a thing about the city, no, no
And I, I, I, hate the country side too
And I hate everything about you
Everything about you

And I, I hate your daddy's guts too
I don't like a thing about your sister, no, no
'Cause I, I, I, think sex is overrated too
And I get sick when I'm around

I hate everything about you
Everything about you, everything about you
Everything about you

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
Its pretty cool nowadays to think ugly kid joe are sad but i dont care this is a decent song! Is the dialog at the begining that goes "Are you the guys on the beach who hate everything ? Is this some sort of hip music that I don't understand?" from a film or cartoon or something? or is is just them putting on a funny voice
@riviera Saturday Night Live (early-90s) had a sexually ambiguous character named Pat, who provided those lines (in character).
i love dis song !! its just so kool n funny!! n i love ugly kid joe ther awsum dudes!!! rock on 4 life !! \m/ \m/ lv sasha
The voice at the begining is "Pat" from Saturday Night Live...s/he is in the video too
haha, i love this song. it's sooooo addictive. Just the way he sings is just so... cool.
It\'s about some guy, who hates someone
Seems like he hates everything not just the girl. Pretty negative guy lmao
riviera, apparantly this song is featured on the original Waynes World movie, so I'm guessing your idea of the dialog is correct
It was included in Wayne's World (in the background of the diner scene) however this dialogue never occured. I'd assume hellfirecan is correct with his statement
less comments than i expected - i don think its an underdstatement to say this is an old classic
Yeah this song is timeless. Youthful, rebelious lyrics that I'm sure any teenage or 20-something can relate too. Not to mention the fact that it's one of the most catchy songs I've ever heard.
The voice at the beginning is Pat from old Saturday Night Live skits, he/she had her own movie too. Pat was really a chick though, Julia Sweeney.
I like this song but judging by the comments I'm not sure many people understand it. It's a parody of teenage rebellion. This guy hates everything, you name it and he hates it. It's not meant to be taken seriously at all, it's just a fun catchy song.
