I got a picture of a photograph
Of a wedding in a shell
It's just a burning ancient memory
I never kiss and tell

So turn it up and burn it
There's a hole in your head
There's a hole in your head
Where the birds can't sing along

Does anybody know
How the story really goes?
How the story really goes?
Or do we all just hum along?

Sell your soul and sign an autograph
Big bang baby, it's a crash, crash, crash
I wanna cry but I gotta laugh
Orange crush mama is a laugh, laugh, laugh

Spin me up, spin me, spin me out
Station to station, send me up and out
Is this what life and love is all about?
I think, I think so

We used to see in color
Now it's only black and white
Yeah, it's only black and white
'Cause the world is color blind

Does anybody know
How the story really goes?
How the story really goes?
Or do we all just hum along?

Sell your soul and sign an autograph
Big bang baby, it's a crash, crash, crash
I wanna cry but I gotta laugh
Orange crush mama is a laugh, laugh, laugh

Nothing's for free
Nothing's for free
Take it away boys

Nothing's for free
Nothing's for free
Take it away boys

So turn it up and burn it
There's a hole in your head
There's a hole in your head
Where the birds can't sing along

Does anybody know
How the story really goes?
How the story really goes?
Or do we all just hum along?

Sell your soul and sign an autograph
Big bang baby, it's a crash, crash, crash
I wanna cry but I gotta laugh
Orange crush mama is a laugh, laugh, laugh

Nothing's for free
Nothing's for free
Take it away boys

Nothing's for free
Nothing's for free
Take it away boys

So turn it up and burn it
There's a hole in your head
A hole in your head
Where the birds can't sing along

Does anybody know how the story really goes?
The story really goes?
Or we all just hum along?

This song is about selling out, selling yourself short in love, and being messed up.
I've also heard its about Courtney Love and her marriage to Kurt (and Scott's supposed lifelong crush on her) but who knows. It's probably a rumour, but I can see how the lyrics may be interpreted in that way:

"I got a picture of a photograph of a wedding and a shell it's just a burning aching memory I never kiss and tell" - looking at pictures of a wedding and harbouring a secret admiration for someone but never telling anyone

"there's a hole in your head there's a hole in your head " - reference to her band perhaps?

"sell your soul and sign an autograph big bang baby it's a crash, crash, crash I wanna cry but I gotta laugh" - disappointment in her (both for being a sellout and marrying someone else)

"is that what life and love is all about" - Love

"for free nothing's for free take it away boys nothing's for free nothing's for free take it away boys "

Anyways, I thought that was interesting.

I wonder if the orange crush lyric in the chorus is an R.E.M. reference.

    Memory

This song was released after Scott spent time in rehab with the manager of my old band. He told the stories of debauchery, crime and betrayal to Scott. The name of the band??? Big Bang Babies.

If you know the band, where their from, what they looked like, what they did...you'd know it to be the truth.

Look to Too Cool Queenie if you want a song about Cobain and Courtney Love.

This song is one of my favorites of theirs...question, though. Was this song ever on a soundtrack to a movie or TV show? Because I heard it when I was younger & I could have sworn I got it from the TV....

exactly the same with me, its so great. when it does the line "where the birds cant sing along" and screams it, but it's numbed- awsome.

and to be honest, it's hard enough to look into the real meaning of any song, let alone Scott's, it's so much harder because you have to consider the drugs he was on when he wrote them. i gave up looking into the meanings very quickly, but i still find it interesting to read the lyrics =]

My favorite part is "cause the world is colorblind"...I just think it's funny the way they yell it in the background in that high-pitched voice. Anyway Scott's voice sounds weird in this song, how does he do that? Sounds like he's been eating nothing but Weetabix with no milk for days on end.

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
