  • Added 2 Artists to SM: The Fresh & Onlys . . . and Macklemore by artmaven at 2009-11-04 16:02:26
Haven't added artists in a long time to SM. I'm slacking. Yesterday, I added somebody, but I'll be damned if I can remember who, right now. If I don't stay on top of this in the journal, I don't stand a chance.

Today, I added The Fresh & Onlys. Heard their new album, Grey-Eyed Girls -- a Fall 2009 release -- on Rhapsody. They're fuzzy, grimy, lo-fi, garagey, psych-poppy, rock 'n' roll.

    *************************

Oh, sumptin' shook loose in my head. The artist I added yesterday is Macklemore. Seattle Hip-Hop. Heard him via a mix of newstuff posted by a CIF over at imeem. He heard Macklemore on a KEXP podcast. My CIF wrote that the song he posted, "The Town," "is about [Macklemore's] music scene."

    "I learned from my teachers
    But became through my music.
Take that away, that's a vital.
Fourteen fathoms deep. Do the math. Tribal."

    It's a good listen.

  • added lyric - Roman Candle - "Eden Was a Garden" by artmaven at 2009-05-18 17:12:21
Last week, I saw a post on the boards about Roman Candle. INKC said he liked their new album, Oh Tall Tree In The Ear. I gave it a try thru Rhapsody and love it. These guys are perfect for power pop night at Wigginstock.

You just gotta have the lyrics down for these guys so you can sing along w/frontman Skip Matheny and his soaring vocals. I added lyrics for "Eden Was a Garden." I gotta do more.
  • added Amadou & Mariam to artists by artmaven at 2009-05-18 02:02:24
    Amadou & Mariam weren't on SM??? C'mon!

    Fixed.

    Anybody got lyrics?
  • added lyrics to "John in the Morning by artmaven at 2009-05-18 01:12:23
Damien Jurado wrote and sings the John in the Morning theme. It's played each day before DJ John Richards starts "The Morning Show" at 6am PT on KEXP, 90.3 in Seattle. www.kexp.org

I like John and the music he plays. I like the little theme song and always find myself singing along w/it. I don't think I've heard anything else by Damien Jurado. I dunno, maybe I have and don't remember. Listening to John and Cheryl makes work more tolerable, sometimes even joyous. The kids ask me the names of the artists/songs played when something catches their ear. That happens rather often these days. Just last week, Tyler asked me who was singing the "John in the Morning" song. He's asked me about The Thermals, The Horrors and The Hold Steady recently. Gina has asked me about Mates of State and Rhett Miller. Even Nicole asked me about Jack Pinate on Friday. I like teaching them that the radio CAN be good if we demand it and seek out quality stations. Hearing John's theme song means another day full of potential for the kids and me.

Earlier today, I thought to look for the theme song on SM and was surprised that it wasn't already here. I don't see the lyrics listed anywhere online. Is that possible? I guess since we all sing them everyday, no one needs them posted. I added them earlier today, anyway. Just because.
  • added The Shackeltons to SM artists by artmaven at 2009-05-16 23:26:28
I've been meaning to add The Shackeltons to SM since I saw them in July at Wigginstock (XPoNential Music Festival at Wiggins Park in Camden, NJ). What the hell took me so long, I dunno.

I put up the band's main site as their link b/c it's so beautifully done and includes a nice myspace link. Their myspace is kickass, too. I definitely hafta get back there and catch up on the news.

Speaking of . . . they're playing tonight (prolly as I write this) at the Khyber w/ Dexateens & The Features. I'm not there. My life sux! Boo, me. :(
  • Added Blk Jks by artmaven at 2009-05-16 21:08:25
Tonight, I added the artist Blk Jks to SM but I don't have any lyrics for them. I'm googling but nothing is turning up for me.

There is a person named Ankia requesting suggestions for a song to analyze for an English oral. I recommended "Thin Blue Flame" but then wondered how useful that would be. Ankia is from South Africa so I thought of Blk Jks. I've read that they write philosophical lyrics but I've not seen them written and I cannot quite make them out in their music. I hope someone will post their lyrics here.
  • Townes Van Zandt - Mr. Mudd and Mr. Gold by artmaven at 2009-05-12 01:13:43
Hey! I just noticed that my status on SM changed to "Trusted Member."
Wooo + hoooooo !!! Very nice, tyvm.

In celebration, I submitted lyrics to
Townes Van Zandt - "Mr. Mudd and Mr. Gold"

How is it possible these lyrics weren't already here? If ya ask me, Townes' songs are woefully under represented on SM. Damn kids. Get off my lawn!

Steve Earle's new album TOWNES is superb. Delete the JoBros and go listen to Townes in all his incarnations.
  • Steve Wynn & the Miracle Three - "Bruises" by artmaven at 2009-01-29 17:05:42
I suggested the lyrics for Steve Wynn & the Miracle Three - "Bruises"
It came to mind when I took a fall on my way to the bed a couple nights ago. When Dan mentioned his on-ice wipeout on-air today, I took it as a sign. Just awaiting approval, now.
  • The Night Marchers by artmaven at 2009-01-11 22:22:18
I suggested The Night Marchers be added. Good band, w/a good 2008 release, See You In Magic. Surprising they're not here already.

The Night Marchers is lead by John Reis of Rocket From The Crypt and Hot Snakes.

    This is from allmusic _________________________

The Night Marchers represent a meeting of the minds of some of the more potent figures in West Coast punk. The Night Marchers were founded by guitarist John Reis, aka Speedo, who previously led the bands Rocket from the Crypt, Drive Like Jehu, Pitchfork, the Sultans, and Hot Snakes. By 2007, Reis was without a band and had plenty else to do, dividing his time between running the label Swami Records, building a recording studio, and opening a nightclub in San Diego, CA, called the Pink Elephant. Despite his busy schedule, Reis suddenly found himself overflowing with ideas for songs, and after coming up with 20 new tunes, he decided it was time to put together a new band to play them. For his new project, Reis recruited former Hot Snakes guitarist Gar Wood (nicknamed Dner) and drummer Jason Kourkonis (aka Sinclair), another Hot Snakes alumnus who had also kept time with Bardo Pond, the Delta 72, and Mule. To round out the lineup, they gave the group a dash of international flavor by bringing in Montreal native and CPC Gangbangs veteran Tommy Kitsos to play bass, and the band was now a quartet. The Night Marchers rolled into the studio in late 2007 and emerged with their debut album, See You in Magic, released collaboratively by Swami and Vagrant Records in April 2008.

  • The Henry Clay People by artmaven at 2008-12-28 23:26:19
I just heard The Henry Clay People - "Living in Debt" on the archived stream of KEXP's morning show. It was good enough to check for them here. Saw nothing so I suggested they be added. The new album is For Cheap or For Free on the label Autumn Tone Records. It was released Nov 4, 2008. Their site is http://www.thehenryclaypeople.com/ and they have a myspace you can access thru that link, too.

From what I've heard so far, they rock a little like the 'Mats. This review from LA Record http://blog.myspace.com/larecord.com made me wanna listen to the rest of the album tonight and Rhapsody has it so, I will.

"First of all, I don't believe this came out of Los Angeles. This is the sound of the Midwest --- of middle-of-nowhere towns, of flying down the interstate past corn fields and truck stops. The song titles give it away: "Living in Debt." "Bulls Through." "Working Part Time." Second of all, I want to call it Uncle Tupelo with Doug Martsch on vocals. but I just can't. While those comparisons give you an idea of what you're going to hear on For Cheap or For Free, they also sell the album short. These Henry Clay People have delivered a scorching set of twangy, gutsy rock that doesn't sound like anything new but is somehow infectiously fresh. It's in the way they spit out their lyrics ---more arguing than singing --- about being "broke but still alive" and "tired of leaving out futures up to fate." It's in the way they turn what would otherwise be a straigh-ahead alt-country jam into an urgent, arena sized-anthem, tearing through it like it's their last shot. This is the kind of record you'd like to sneak into the jukebox of some blue-collar bar in Milwaukee and watch the surly dudes forget that they have no idea who this is and give in to head-nodding and boot-stomping. Just don't tell them it's a bunch of young whippersnappers from L.A." --LA Record
  • Two Cow Garage Lyrics by artmaven at 2008-12-22 08:00:14
I think I suggested these guys be added as artists but I don't remember for sure. That's pretty much why I started keeping track in the journal. Seems to me that 2cow are one of the main reasons for it. Since I couldn't remember, I never added lyrics.

    Anyway, I submitted two songs:
    "Come Back to Shelby"
    "No Shame"
  • Ninja Gun by artmaven at 2008-12-16 02:46:36
Suggested a new artist to SM:

Just listened to a band called Ninja Gun from Valdosta, Georgia. A guest blogger on NineBullets.net did a piece on them and I was able to listen to the whole album via Rhapsody. The album, Restless Rubes, isn't bad. A decent little Alt-Country offering from June 2008 w/a stunning album cover. The cover is what made me stop and read the blog entry. Let's hear it for good album art!

  • Lyres' Bio from AllMusic by artmaven at 2008-12-14 16:02:53
This is the bio on Lyres, from allmusic -----

    "Biography by John Dougan
Few bands in Boston rock & roll history have lasted as long, and made as much good music, as Lyres. Led by garage rock obsessive, record collector, Farfisa organ king, and world-class megalomaniac Jeff "Monoman" Conolly, Lyres rose from the ashes of Conolly's first band, DMZ. Sporting a similar high-energy trash-rock sound indebted to the Seeds, ? & the Mysterians, the Stooges, and the early British Invasion (especially early Kinks), Lyres, for a brief, shining moment, were the kingpins of Boston's punk rock scene. Resembling venerable British blues-rockers Savoy Brown because of a constantly changing lineup (something like 40 musicians have passed through the ranks), Lyres (or more specifically, Monoman) gleefully party on, oblivious of trends or the assorted vagaries of the alternative rock marketplace. A dinosaur in his own right? Perhaps, but as long as Jeff Conolly has his organ, a few guys behind him, and a place to play, the simple joy that can only be had through rock & roll will exist in this world — hipness be damned!"
  • Lyres needs to be here. by artmaven at 2008-12-14 15:47:46
There's no listing on SM for the Lyres. How can that be? I just suggested they be added. There's a decent entry for them on Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyres_(band) but there's no official website. There is a kinda "in limbo" fansite at http://www.limbos.org/lyres/ that's semi decent.

Great band. Should be on SM. No question.
  • Wild Sweet Orange - We Have Cause to Be Uneasy - "Crickets" by artmaven at 2008-12-08 21:48:29
There's this terrific album that I've been listening to and, I can't believe it but, most of the lyrics are here at SM. This site has some good people contributing.

"Crickets" wasn't here, tho. I just submitted the lyrics. I think I got 'em right.

The album is We Have Cause to Be Uneasy. It's good. A 2008 contender for my top 10 list.
  • "She Left Me for Jesus" - Hayes Carll by artmaven at 2008-12-08 11:45:34
I just added "She Left Me for Jesus" a couple minutes ago. Gotta have that one in there. Great song.

The other Hayes Carll lyrics I submitted were approved and posted.
  • Hayes Carll - Trouble in Mind ---- lyrics added by artmaven at 2008-12-07 22:52:36
Until the new and improved SM site keeps track of lyrics submitted again, I'll be journaling what I've added so I can go back and proof it, again. There's no way I can remember what I add. I need to track it. I'm certain I added a ton more than what's showing, now. The new site design is real nice but, I can't wait 'til everything's working like it should.

So, tonight I added these lyrics for Hayes Carll from his 2008 Trouble in Mind album. I hope to get back later tonight and add more.

"Bad Liver and a Broken Heart"
    "Beaumont"
    "Drunken Poet's Dream"
    "Girl Downtown"
    "I Got a Gig"

Dang! I like this album a shitload more than I thought I would. Dye was right, it's good.

  • Suggested Left Lane Cruiser for addition to artists by artmaven at 2008-11-16 22:46:52

There's no LLC listed among the artists so, I suggested them. I had to use their myspace as their website b/c that's all I could find for them. It's http://www.myspace.com/leftlanecruiser

Their genre is really Punk-Blues, a freakin' great combo, but the drop-down menu at SM only allows for either Punk or Blues so, I chose Punk. I figure, if you don't notice that it's also Blues from their lyrics then you're a bit dense. Problem is, I haven't worked up their lyrics yet. Gotta do that. There's just two guys in this band. Fredrick "Joe" Evans IV is on slide guitar and vocals. Brenn Beck is on drums/percussion, harmonica and backup vocals. Great band and their 2008 release, Bring Yo' Ass to the Table, kicks ass.

  • Suggested Von Sudenfed for addition to artists by artmaven at 2008-11-02 21:04:15

There's no Von Sudenfed listed among the artists! Imagine that. Ok, so prolly not that shocking. There's only one album. But it's soooo good and people NEED the lyrics. Imagine the potential discussions about "Chicken Yiamas" that we can generate. The mind reels.

I suggested them today. The only official site I could find was http://www.dominorecordco.com/artists/von-sudenfed/

Got it off their myspace page. Well, their myspace posts the link to the record label. I had to click thru to their page and submit that w/their name. I hope they get added.

    www.myspace.com/vonsudenfed

This is what's posted on their lable page:

'I feel like now it doesn't matter, it's not important, which decade you're referencing or whether you've got the coolest break or electronic trick. It's just the energy that counts. Jan St Werner

Tromatic Reflexxions is the debut album by Von Sudenfed. And who are Von Sudenfed?
For starters they're a trio formed by Andi Toma, Mark E Smith and Jan St Werner. But depending who you ask and how, they're a sound-system, a family, a band. They're all these things and more, as Jan himself explains: 'We wanted the album to have the energy we would imagine a hybrid band - a futuristic band playing grime or ska or soca like a pirate radio station - to have.'

Not to mention the electro, dubstep and disco thrown into the mix. But Von Sudenfed does more than take a spin, via Dusseldorf and Salford, through the terrain of London pirates. It combines the genre-smashing attack of early-millennia club music with Mark E Smith's free-associating visionary wordplay. To adapt the Situationists, under the dancefloor, the beach. Or in the case of a track like 'Flooded', over the dancefloor, a sea - Mark's lyric retells a dream of Jan's in which he booked a club to DJ at, only for an interloping DJ to turn up and commandeer the decks. The Von Sudenfed response? Carnivalesque anarchist sabotage: flood the club. This is unmistakably club music, but it's club music that's liable to spark off outbreaks of lucid dreaming, mid-move.

On 'Flooded' the stuttering, garage-inflected beats and the sub-bass that comes warping out of them fit Mark's furious/triumphant vocal like they grew up together. It's typical of the way Tromatic Reflexxions sounds like the work of a group - unlike the results of all too many producer-singer collaborations, where the vocals sound like phoned-in afterthoughts to fill a voice-shaped blank. And in a sense this album is the work of a group. The trio got together in Dusseldorf and jammed out ideas for days before refining down the material into tracks, and Mark was integral to the shape they took, getting involved with their arrangements and insisting they were kept as direct and focussed as possible.

But as Tromatic Reflexxions unfolds, the word 'group' becomes inadequate. This isn't a standard set-up with Musician A on Instrument A and Musician B on Instrument B. The riffs and rhythms come together from so many different places, with synths, samplers and sequencers all firing off. It's not a band: it's a free-flowing collectivist dance generator - a futurist sound system.

Mark E Smith on the other hand sees Von Sudenfed as a family affair. The name picks up on the region of Germany where Jan grew up (von suden) with perhaps a nod to a certain cough remedy (Nation of Ulysses fans take note). Families have stories: half-brothers, half-sisters, secrets, births, deaths (check the JuJu guitars on 'Dear Dead Friends'). And of course arguments - hence a track like 'Family Feud', where Mark adopts the characters of different members of the 'family' and arbitrates between them.

The offspring of this House of Von Sudenfed are more direct and upfront than anything Mouse on Mars fans might expect, from the second that 'Fledermaus Can't Get Enough' blasts off. Although equally, for those who think they've got irascible-Mark-E-Smith-of-The-Fall pegged, on the sweet shortwave stomp of 'The Rhinohead', the family have got a vocal from him as wistful, as tender even, as any of his beloved Northern Soul cuts.

'That Sound Wiped' stands out on the album in the way it builds more slowly from basic disco building blocks into a r'n'bleeping electro monster. But it's a track that leads back to Von Sudenfed's origins in a London gig by Mouse on Mars where they first struck up with Mark. This meeting led in 2005 to Mark providing vocals for a 12-inch release of Mouse on Mars' 'Wipe That Sound'. (Unused material from this initial collaboration became 'That Sound Wiped'.) All parties agreed there was more work to be done, and Von Sudenfed was born.

Mark has already been discussing with Jan and Andi how to fit sessions for the second album into their schedules. But before that, summer 2007 will see Von Sudenfed in live action - ideally in a festival, carnival or club context where they can roll out their sound-system strategy in the places it makes most sense - and some remixes to watch out for.

Mark E Smith has led The Fall through more than 25 studio albums since their formation in Manchester 31 years ago. His lyrics, delivery, song-writing and attitude have had an incalculable influence on punk, post-punk and as many of their close relations and off-shoots as you care to think of, with artists from Wu Tang's RZA, to LCD Soundsystem, DJ Shadow, and Pavement all acknowledged fans.

Jan St Werner and Andi Toma are best known for their work together as Mouse on Mars, debuting in 1994 with Vulvaland. On albums like Niun Niggung (their first for Domino), Idiology and Radical Connector they've gone on to perfect a signature sound which blends the lateral improvisational moves of jazz with the abstract complexities of electronica and the directness of acoustic instrumentation.

  • Glossary by artmaven at 2008-07-02 04:45:01
I'm starting to remember some artistsI suggeted be added. One of them is Glossary. Now that they're up on the site, I added the lyrics to 2007's album, The Better Angels Of Our Nature.

I also suggested T Bone Burnett and he's up but I haven't gotten around to adding lyrics, yet.
  • Suggested Artists and Sonny Landreth by artmaven at 2008-06-22 19:24:03
This site keeps track of your favorite artists as well as the lyrics and comments you've posted. It doesn't keep track of the artists who you suggest be added to the site. I'll be damned if I can remember who I've suggested in the past. Mind like a steel trap, I know. My plan is to keep track here so that I can go back and add the lyrics.

Today I suggested Sonny Landreth while listening to him on "Mountain Stage." I can't believe zeke's pal isn't on here already. Sonny is a "Louisiana-based slide guitar wizard."

To check out Sonny's new album “From the Reach,” as well as the rest of his catalog, go here >>> www.sonnylandreth.com ...tho, this may be easier >>> www.sonnylandreth.com/sonnyframes.html
I hope SongMeanings lets me post those URLs. If not, just try SonnyLandreth.com
You can dl song excerpts in MP3 format, read news, his bio, check tour dates and more.

For this, his 9th album, Sonny decided he wanted to work w/a buncha friends. Most are guitar greats tho, he didn't limit it to just guitar. Sonny wrote the songs specifically for his guests and himself to record together.
Guest artists on the album include: Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Vince Gill, Eric Johnson, Robben Ford, Dr. John, Jimmy Buffett and Nadirah Shakoor.

It's a real good album. Today, my fave song is "Blue Tarp Blues." Lyrically, think Hurricane Katrina, NOLA, Bush. Musically, Landreth's slide and Knopfler's Strat are a helluva combo. Enjoy!
