Welcome to the SongMeanings FAQ.
This page contains answers to the most frequently asked questions. If you've got a question, check here before you ask us, chances are the answer you seek will be right here.
If you don't see your question here or need further help, feel free to contact a moderator.
There is no way to change your songmeanings.net username at this time. We're particularly sorry for this, as it's probably our most requested site feature.
It is impossible to technically "delete" any given profile altogether at this time.
If you contact a moderator or administrator with the intent to have your account deleted, the account used to contact us will be de-activated, the password will be reset, and the song comments history will be cleared. This is the most we can do at this time.
To add an artist to your favorite artists list, browse to the artist's page and click on "Become a Fan", located right next to your login box.
You can suggest an artist via the Suggest Artist page. Please check to see if the artist is already in the database and make sure that your suggestion follows our Artist Acceptance Policy.
Duplicate artists should be reported and will be axed.
Please do the same for duplicate lyrics.
If you'd like to correct an artist's genre, the year and location they originated from, their official website, or their biography page, let us know in the Report Thread.
There will be someday. Patience, young grasshopper.
At this time, there's only one way to display thread order - "sticky" threads, then general threads, sorted by most recent reply in descending order, GMT - 5.
You should probably report it. Retaliation is no more tolerated than instigative bullying.
We don't aim to advocate spamming and trolling, but please try to remember that your pride really doesn't matter on the internet. If you're insulted and you can't ignore it, you're not a lesser person for reporting it. Do not be petty and spiteful. Do not let a fellow member drag you down to their level.
Dude, no.
Again, your thread was probably intentionally removed for a good reason and incessant re-posting of your thread can and will get you banned from the site.
And again, if you feel your thread should not have been removed, it's advised that you take it up with a member of the team first to gain some clarity.
We're sorry. We deserve it.
This probably was not an accident. Chances are your thread was deleted by a member of the team for falling outside the admission rules.
If you feel you posted a legitimate, unoffensive thread that fell within the rules and you can't find it in the forums anymore, you might think of contacting a member of the team.
We are currently out of stock of SongMeanings merchandise. Please check back at a later time.
That's what she said.
Since our database is growing constantly, anything we could write here would be instantly out of date. Take a look at the left side for some basic statistics on our database.
We welcome any suggestions for SongMeanings. You can suggest a feature within the SongMeanings Forum.
For information on our staff, check the Who We Are page.
You do! Our site is a community effort; we provide the site, and you provide the content. Because of the community effort, we can boast one of the largest and diverse collection of lyrics on the internet.
At the moment such a feature is unavailable.
But that would be cool though.
Absolutely not. In your Preferences > Journal tab you can tweak whether your journal is publically visible, or only visible to you. A private journal cannot be accessed to anybody except you whether they're logged in, logged out, or even a member of the team. You also have the ability to select whether users can reply to your journal or not, and furthermore whether you'd like to facilitate those replies or not.
We have the utmost respect for your privacy. Because let's just face it. We love you.
Your journal is whatever you need it to be. A Journal is the SM version for a blog. You know what to do.
You might try Sudsonbleeker - a place to view articles pertaining to current musically related events.
We also have a Headline News forum if you're interested in seeing what our other users have to say, or if you're interested in posting current events of your own.

If a successfully sent message has not been opened by the user it was sent to, it will appear in the "outbox" tab. If it has been opened, it will appear in the "sentbox" tab.
These features of Private Messaging are unavailable at this time.
Under the "Private Messages" link in the logged in status box, click the far right tab labled "New PM". You can either Search for a user to send the message to next to the "To" text box, or manually type in the username. Be warned however, that this field is case sensitive and recognizes the difference between underscores and spaces in usernames. If you are not completely sure as to the precise characters in a given username, we recommend searching for the user before you send the message.
After this, simply type in the body of your message in the corresponding text box and send.
There is no message recovery system or trash box system in place at this time.
At this time, searching for a SongMeanings community member is not possible.
Search results are sorted by SongMeanings popularity based on views. Therefore, a song that has been viewed a million times will always be at the top of search results, while a song viewed ten times will be towards the bottom.
At this time, this is the only sorting method possible. Changes will be eventually made to the advanced search area to allow the user to control sorting preferences.
Excluding a word while searching indicates that you do not want pages that contain this word to appear in your results. To exclude a word while searching, attach a minus (-) sign directly before a word. For example, if you want to search for dogs but not cats, your query would be: dogs -cats
On the upper-left hand corner of every page, there is a search engine that you can use to find what you're looking for. You can browse by the title of the song, the artist's main page containing all of their lyrics in our database, or by the specific lyrics of the song you're looking for. Also, try our advanced search features.
To search for an exact word or phrase, put your query in quotes. For example, if you wanted to search for an exact match of the term in the jungle baby, you would put your query in as: "in the jungle baby"
No. If a song is submitted under a "clean" version it will probably be treated as a duplicate and deleted, unless the other version is a distinctly different song.
The lyrics are the property of the original artists, and we represent them as they are.
You can add new lyrics by browsing to the artist you wish to add lyrics for, and then clicking on "Add Lyric" at the top right of the artists page.
Lyrics go through a review process -- they will not be posted to the site immediately, rather, our moderators will check them for format and validity.
Please read the Lyric Guidelines before you start posting lyrics.
After you've sucessfully logged into songmeanings.net with your account, find the lyric you're looking for (see above) and scroll down to the "add comments" section. Use the text box to type in your comment. Make sure to select the type of comment you're submitting in the drop-down list box provided, then make sure your comment falls within the submission terms, and submit!
If you find yourself agreeing or disagreeing with another user's comment, you are welcome to use the + and - rating system using the plus and minus shaped buttons next to the comment you wish to rate. If you want to give a more specific direct response to another user's comment, click the reply link next to the comment.
Please keep in mind that the main foundation of songmeanings.net is open mindedness and personal interpretation, so feel free to provide dissenting opinions over music, but also respect the fact that the other users of this site have as much of a right to their views as you have a right to disagree with them. To personally harrass another user based on their beliefs of something as subjective as music is immature and highly discouraged. Be respectful when addressing somebody else's opinion.
The exception to this rule is when another user has posted a comment that violates the submission conditions, or violates the rights of another person. For these instances, please report the incident to a moderator or an administrator on the team.
Assuming that you mean they're inaccurate instead of being morally objectionable, please DO NOT clog up the comments section of ANY song with lyrics corrections under any circumstance.
At this time, you can use the Report Thread to submit lyrics corrections.
Please make sure to report all dupes. They will be merged with the "parent" lyric, or otherwise deleted entirely. If a merging takes place, no song comments in either song page are lost. The parent lyric absorbs the deleted lyrics comments without carrying over those nasty inaccurate lyrics with it and the comments mesh into one comments section and re-organize chronologically.
