As you can tell, we're now running the new code for SongMeanings. Sure, it's rough round the edges (I'll be saying this forever), but it's a huge improvement over the old code.

The new code opens so many wonderful opportunities for the SongMeanings community. We're very excited to see where this all can take us.

You're currently only seeing the "tip of the iceberg" with the new code. And as such, you're going to see many issues and many bugs. The only way to overcome these issues is with your help, so if you catch something, please post it in the "bugs" forum.

If you're having problems logging in or signing up, please send an e-mail to smx@songmeanings.net.

help! I can't get rid of this ugly blue and orange colour scheme!

So, I don't suppose there's going to be any "Classic" skin option?  I was rather fond of the compact look, as well as the all-over small font.

Err... click on the songs, the comments are still there. The numbers all say '0' but that's a lie. They're there, no worries!

Right now, the top of the list is getting you guys to stay logged in and the statistics box.

I understand the first one, because I hate when it kicks me off, too.

But the second?  Man, that box goes down and I get flooded with e-mails telling me: OMHZZGGZZ YOUR DATABASE IS GONEN~?@~@?!~ WHERE DID MY COMMENTS GO?#!?@#!

Login seems to have stablised/fixed for me Mike.. Firefox 3.0.3 - Ive been logged in without getting logged out for a good 15+ minute..

its still been logging me out a fair bit.

Also, cant work out journals, is there a link to them on someones profile page?

Yeah you're right, the logout issue still isnt resolved.. As for journals, untill a link becomes available in peoples profiles you can view them by using http://www.songmeanings.net/journals/view/<userid here> for example your userid is 17063761.

Other peoples user ids can be found by viewing there profile, and looking in the url.

i really liked the old songmeanings. i dont like this at all. i vote for classic theme.

dang its havin a lotta fun loggin me out.... anyways another thing i (for one) like the new way it looks but what happened to the thing where you could go from login back to the page you were at before? cuz it's annoyin to go from lookin at a lyrics page to log in to having to go back and make your way to the lyrics page again. just my 2 cents

It doesn't seem to want to let me log out. And then when I want to be logged IN it logs me out on the next page. xD

That and I can't comment on journals. But that's pretty minor in comparison.

Alternatively you could start adding them again by browsing to the artists page and clicking 'Become a Fan'. I may however advise against this, untill it's definite that we cannot bring back the old ones.

 The old site layout was better in that regard, this upgrade broke the SongMeanings search command at http://yubnub.org/ -- just wondering if there's a new method so I can edit/create a new command for it.

The new forum looks nice, much cleaner then the old one. But all the artists' that I've added to my favorite's list on the old forum, I don't see them anymore. do I have to add them all back?

Would you prefer the old lyric pages?  Where you were insanely bombarded with ads with no regards to the layout?  Atleast with the new lyric pages, the ads are somewhat cleanly placed on the page. 

I don't do change well, either. At first I was freaked out that the site looked different. Kinda got mad when I thought some things had been deleted. I'm MUCH better about the change now that I've read this forum. I'll be patient while you fix bugs and try to bring back the stuff that's missing. Sure hope you can get favorite artists back b/c I had a bunch.

Fave new thing: The LARGER TYPE, tyvm. :)  I DO remember 1969 so, I'm old enough to have trouble reading teensy lyrics and comments. Bloody pain in the arse, having old eyes. To all you young'uns . ..  your time will come soon enough. :P ... damn rugrats.

When I fist saw the new layout, I was a little bummed. But only because I hate change and have been coming here for 5 years...I loved songmeanings the way it was.

Not a fan, at allll, of the wide spacing and font size (that was one of the reasons why I love SM, because lyrics weren't spread out over a huge space, everything was right here, one glance with the eye, and I just think the smaller font type looks better), but I'm assuming (or hoping!) that once the themes are created all that will be sorted out. Other than that, I like the colors, looks great!

If i click on my profile, i see the tabs at the top that would allow me to look at my site interaction, but i can't click them. I also can't update my interests (or my favorites, but people have definately said that).

I secretly loved this place for so long, I'll stop by more often now.

New site looks great. Over the past couple days I can see quite a bit of improvement too. I think it would kind of be neat to have a column in the side bar that has like top 5 lyric submitters or something along those lines. But anyways. Great job with the site. Lookin good.

We have some ideas to really promote the community aspect of the site -- there's a ton of ways we can be promoting new comments, top submitters, new journals, etc. 

Mike i don't know if it's something that bothers anyone else, but i dislike the new forum posting system.

With the new system we have to navigate away from the thread page to post a reply. We can't even post the reply in a new browser tab. (At least in IE, i can't right click on the "Post reply" button.)

I know i complained about the size of the posting box before. I should probably just accept that it's not possible to make a site that suits everyone.

I like how fast it is now. I do appreciate all the effort you've all put in.

Forums will see it's improvements, don't you worry.  Idan has sent me countless ways of improving everything, and I plan to implement his ideas over time.  Quick reply will be back, and forums will be a hell of a lot cleaner.

Did you see the lyric pages before this revision? It was 10x worse. In fact, the old code had more advertisements than the current lyric pages.

The best I can do is hide certain advertisements if the user is a trusted user. Other than that, we need this revenue to stay alive. We turn down advertisements that could net us larger gains (like flashing banners, pop-ups, pop-unders, full page, etc) to keep the fan base happy.

There are ways we could really whore this site out, and we don't. Why? Because I hate going to sites that have advertisements every where, so why am I going to put my users through the same thing?

70% of our traffic come here straight from a search engine.  They spend 30 seconds to read the lyrics and then leave.  So how do we capitalize from these types of users yet still making the loyal users happy?  I thought we were doing a pretty good job by cutting down on the annoying advertisements.

Tell you what -- what advertisement on the lyric page turns you off?

the new SM kinda sucks. I was putting some lyrics in as I always do and the freakin' thing deleted all of a sudden. Then I put them in again and your site deleted them again!! I give up! Also it sucks that you can't go back and edit old lyrics like you used to. Please correct these otherwise I won't be a happy SM user any longer!

Edit lyric functions are coming.  Please give me some time. 

When you say the thing deleted your lyrics?  What happened?  Did the page automatically reload and your lyrics were gone? Please help us with your issues by being more specific.

i am glad we have the same opinion about that. 

i've got an idea: those, who are not registered see 100% of ads. registered users get some % (15 maybe) of ads off, and trusted users get some more ads off. maybe only trusted users get less ads. it should be easy to promote, like "want to less less ads? register!"

and it would put more people to become users (i suppose it gives advantages for them and you).

right big one banner the most annoying.

less, the ring tones. i suppose turning them from red to orange (or some other dim) colour is alternative. if it is possible, it would be great to do that. but i got used to them.

ads by google and adbrite (the text ones) are not annoying at all, at least for me. so expanding them is not a big deal. by the way, i find them funny. :)

for the last part, i would be glad to have options in preferences to turn off things like "New Additions", " Staff Picks",  "Interaction", "Other Popular Lyrics by". but this is not important for this moment.

and about the space between strokes in lyrics, is it possible to do it more narrow?

one more idea: turn "Other Popular Lyrics by" to all "Lyrics by" and the possibility to scroll there and choose next one of all lyrics by current artist. it would be more comfortable to browse them. but less views of ads, again :)

It would be great if there were again some search engines for FF. The old ones aren't working. It was an extremely convenient way of searching for lyrics, so maybe you could consider changing the serach engine back to the old one or sharing an URL query (if one exists) with the people ;)

when you click edit at the top of the entry it brings you to the screen where you can make your corrections. but then nothing seems to work - clicking "return" just brings you back to the entry with none of the edits added, and clicking "edit" just makes you restart the editing process. is there a submit button that im completely missing!?

The new interface seems fine so far, but one thing that really bugs me is the change of the search function. I used to be able to bookmark the search function in Firefox so I can just type in a keyword plus the artist/song that I wanted to check out the lyrics of. Ever since the new update though, I've been unable to do just that, and the quicksearch function in Firefox doesn't work anymore. If there's a workaround, or if you could fix it it'd be great.

Another petty thing that annoys me, I miss hovering your mouse over the the latest comment and it telling you what song it was on.

It's amazing how people will bitch over the tiniest of things! If you all would just give it time, the small things will be attended to. I'm pretty damn sure of it! Listen, nobody likes when things are changed at first, but 95% of the time you end up "getting used" to things and you forget all about the things that you were sooo used to, and "would just die" if you didn't have this or that.

Come on... You should be thanking these guys for at least attempting to improve the site and for even listening to your opinions in the first place. If they didn't try to improve the site you'd have the same people bitching that "this site is boring" or "geez, I wish they'd try to at least keep up with other lyrics sites."

As a Web Designer myself, i would have to say I LOVE the new design, I think its great, im actually happy its wider, and everything looks much more organized, you guys did a great job, plus the critisim is typical, people love to complain and add input!

Honestly, I don't mind the criticism when it's constructive criticism.  If you don't like something, tell me what you don't like and tell me how to improve upon it.  Telling me, "OMGZ IT SUCKS!" does absolutely nothing.   

The old artist search engine works again. Only the song title one to go ;). By the way, is it possible to tighten things up a bit? The new design has indeed lots of space, but it's even a bit too spacious and I think the old one was a lot more functional and perhaps more clearer (especially when it comes to reading comments). Of course, anyone can change the text size in their browsers, but... it always takes a bit of one's initiative :). Anyway, SM's simply the best out there when it comes to lyrics and you do a great job. Keep it up!

Are you referring to the spacing in the forums as opposed to the journals?

As for the spacing, we did it this way because we have a lot of new content planned.  Eventually these new content pieces will be rolled out and everything will (or should) tie together nicely.  

I was curious if my firefox would ever be able to correct my typing again? Before it always did in the Quick Reply box, but now it doesn't. The same for my journal. I don't know if anyone else asked this, and I'm sorry if they did. Thank you.

i was trying to figure them out so i replied to my own entry, and the reply didn't appear.. where is it supposed to be? 

OMG! My eyes, my eyes! What happened to the larger font? It's smaller now than it ever was. I'm going blind, here! I can't wait 'til you internet babies are middle aged. Then you'll be screaming for a legible sized font. :P

 Could there be any chance of maybe getting one of those buttons that allow you to increase the font size? You know, like they have on sites like the NY Times and other newspapers. Think about it anyway. I won't hold my breath but if you could work it into some future improvement plans it would be very much appreciated. Just think of it as an investment in your own impending decrepit old age. You're gonna hate having to paste everything into Notepad just so you stand a chance of reading it.

Look for a hyperlink that reads "Slide 1 reply to this journal" -- click this and the comment(s) will appear.

I'll see what I can do about the font sizes -- are they really that small?  They're the same size as the previous site.  The only difference is the spaces between lines in a paragraph (they got larger). 

As for a black theme -- once we're ready to do themes, I'll definitely looking into doing a black version.  I also want to be able to launch some kind of theme sdk or theme creator.  But we'll see. 

How long does it take to approve lyrics? Cos i submitted an album of them a few days ago and they've not been added yet. I didn't save them. If lyrics are getting lost, it would be cool if you'd post a warning.

Wow, i just found the audio tab on the album pages. Do we just upload mp3s? What about copyright?

Lyric approval isn't working 100% just yet since the new version, as soon as it does, i'm sure it won't take long and they'll all show up. Hopefully we'll also get the trusted user worked out, so yours wont need to go in the queue any more.

Its pretty small I reckon, I find it pretty hard to read.

Minor ish, at this point but, yep, me too. I'm grateful, tho, that they're all back populating my fave list so, I'm not concerned. Looking forward to the other features working again.

I used Word to compare the font size. I was seeing the equivalent of 6.5 pt. Maybe NOT seeing is more correct.

BUT. . . . . stop the presses! I think I have the problem licked at my end. There’s a box I needed to check off in Internet Options. Now, I can increase the font shown on SM’s site. I never had the problem w/XP or the old laptop. Still, when I first opened the new SM, the font was considerably larger for a couplethree days. Then, one day outta the blue, it was teensy-tiny. Come to think of it, the SM font on the computer at work is, now, teensy-tiny, too. That’s the same computer w/the same settings I’ve been using all along. Something definitely changed at your end. I don’t get it. :-/

It’s all good at home, though. I can seeeeeee. Have I ever been happier? I think not.  :)

On behalf of the progressive-lens-challenged, thanks for taking font size seriously. Still loving the site and all the work you guys put into it.

Agree. Looks like way too much padding, but I love the clean look of the site. As of now, the only two things that bug me:

(1) Double spacing and padding

(2) Inability to check your past interactions

But even with the slight issues, the overall site upgrade is an improvement. The petty small things can be easily fixed later.

i got used to the double-spacing and i actually think it's better because it makes it so much easier to read paragraph-sized posts.

Will there be like a feature where you'll be able to delete your comments on songs, or say have the ability to edit your comments?

We're thinking about the user the option of deleting their comment after X minutes of posting it.

Hm, just a few days ago, when you went to look at lyrics for a song, on the right side, it'd list other popular song lyrics from the same artist.

That's not there anymore. Now there's an ad.

Anyway to fix this..?

The ad was always there.  We had some issues with the box -- I'm currently working on it.  It'll be back.   

Not sure if this is in the right place, but here goes.

 The new search feature only seems to work on the first name of the band.For example, if you were looking for the Cradle Of Filth and could only remember Filth and type that in the search box, the old version would find it yet the new version cannot.

Also if you only had part of the name, for example you may hear on the radio .......ation or just remember the band ended in .....ation, you could type that into the search field and it would offer many suggestions as to the answer, Temptations, Generation X, & Nations etc.

Can this be fixed please.

hey got a problem. on the old sight whenever i typed in a url in a forum post it automaticly put a link around it. it doesn't happen anymore. please try to fix it.

I don't know how it works with your computer, but if you highlight the link then click the icon to link it (between the redo button and the unlink button) it will work.

This is the best site for lyrics because it allows comments and because it has a nice clean look. I only have one suggestion, and that is for a search box to be on every page in the same spot, it is really annoying when I want to look up lyrics from my page and I have to go back to the main page. Still, this is the best site, and I'm glad to see it get higher in the search engine ranks.
