Sorry I'm so talkative but I've had little sleep and my mind is racing. I'm in my I WANNA KNOW mode. What do the points mean and what do they matter? Or do they even matter? I'm competitive. I'd like to think I'm winning some competition. Please humor me.

And how many points must we have earned before we're capable of going unsupervised when posting song lyrics? I wanna be an adult soon :-(

I'm not a mod, but you get points by posting song meanings (+1) and having them rated up (+5). If someone rates you down, it's -2. If you go to your profile, there's a tab labeled "points" and you see the points you've accrued and how you got them. They're to identify "trustworthy" users who actively post and who post thoughtful comments. I'm personally still not a huge of them, though.

Oh, and in answer to your second question, I'm not completely sure, but you have to be a "trusted member" to automatically post lyrics. I'm one myself, and I did all this stuff, so I'm guessing it's some combination of these:
- been on SM for a while
- posted lots of comments
- submitted lyrics
- submitted artists
- submitted journals
- never got in "trouble"
Again, I'm not 100% sure, though.

At present, to be trusted you have to submit fifty full, correct, and correctly formatted lyrics.

You certainly don't have to have submitted lots of comments or journals!

Y'all still have not said what we do with the points? Is there a magical point number we must attain before we can take them to Vegas and roll the dice? I HATE not knowing something and the points are buggin' me. Also, why is submitting artists/lyrics worth LESS than if someone says they agree with our lyrical interpretation? One takes little time while the other requires some effort. Seems fishy to me...

I don't know either, but you totally hit something there... Why would a comment or rating be worth more? But hey, SM is on a reinvention process, but they've been good on a learning curve, so they should have it polished up soon.
In fact, the "albums" tagging feature wasn't working when I started my session some hour back and now it seems to be working, so, I guess they're on it.

Right now, we're only rewarding points for comment related actions. It's the most commonly used feature and we've seen a need to improve the overall quality of comments (aka weed out the OMGSZZ LVOE THIS comments) in general.

Oops. Not sure why I hit Reply without finishing. Anyways.
We hope certain users can begin to stand out from the crowd mainly to promote "better" comments. I put better in quotes because it's certainly subjective. Think of it as another sorting method for comments.
We're slowly rolling it out to get it correct. And we've yet to add any "rewards" to the system; we have ideas for this but nothing in writing.

Dumb. But thanks for the answer; it's better than not knowing. Anyone can rate up his/her own comment; some do it all the time :D Most people will rate up an opinion with which they agree, which doesn't mean it's the best interpretation. Improving the site by adding artists and songs is the foundation of this site. One cannot perform lyrical interpretation if the artist and song are not available. But it does not matter regardess if the points just hang over user names like the notches in our bedposts (not that we have notches in our bedposts, but it was the best analogy I could come up with in such a brief period of time:)

While you can rate your own comments, you actually don't receive points for it.

A leaderboards feature would add competition for points. The value is otiose, but it would add actual incentive to post better comments and be more active. Rewarding points for rating other comments would be a good idea. Only one point, perhaps a maximum of five or 10 per day to prevent spam. This would influence activity to at least log on every day and rate comments. This too would add incentive for better comments and would create a kind courtesy to trading ratings for points.
Forum posts should give one point as well. Obviously this could be a major spam, but the forums need more moderation from what I've seen. A time limitation for consecutive posting could be one minute or something. A community only grows stronger by congregating.
Posting lyrics should award 20 or 25 points. A maximum amount of lyrics posted in 24 hours could be three or five.
Points are obviously nugatory, but I think a strong point structure really lures a community and increases activity. I have never worked on a website before, so I have no idea how difficult my suggestions are to actually implement.

Your writing/vocab is fascinating. I've enjoyed reading your post. You didn't, though, mention a point system for submitting artists and/or lyrics. I'd love to "hear" you comment on that. (Sorry, but your writing style fascinated me:)

I think the same for submitting artists.
Thanks! I read a lot and try to improve my lexicon when I can. I mainly use it as a memory exercise, but to each their own.

Sorry, I am exhausted and apparently missed the point value you gave lyrics. Yes, to each his/her own. Thanks for responding.

Is there any way to see if you are a Trusted Member besides posting on the forums?

Ok, its included on your profile now, too.
I updated your account to Trusted. Not sure why the system did not do it automatically for you. Sorry about that.

Hey Mike,
No worries, Thanks for updating me.
Side note: I like the site you got going on here, a lot faster than I remember a couple of years back.
I know you probably don't, but if you need any help, I'd be willing to help out.
Anyway, thanks again!

Unfortunately I'm not as deep into code as I wish to be, but I am slowly learning.
