Alright, so I've noticed that people have different ideas of what indie music exactly is. In theory, they're bands on independent labels. But what about unsigned bands? What about bands signed to subsets of bigger labels (MGMT or Animal Collective)? Or bands that are part of the former two, but have managed to gang tremendous success (Phoenix has been all over the radio as of late).

I don't really have a specific answer, but I'd like to hear your opinion

I should make myself more clear.

There is nothing anyone could ever say about the "definition of indie" that is not completely and immediately stupid and invalid.  But "no" was just a suggestion.  Maybe it'll catch on.
