Why not just call it D.I.Y?

Some bands who make their own music eventually become part of a record label, but still continue to make their own music and there are so many bands like; the killers, who many consider "indie" but always released their music off a rmajor label. So why not just call it D.I.Y music and cut the crap from seeping in and destroying a perfectly good, eclectic.inclsuive, broad music genre/scene?

It'd be the same shit. Some band having their lyrics written by a genius producer with a son-of-a-bitch advertising program that would become famous and a prentious fucking lie, like indie is.

The people who really do their stuff are known in the underground for it.

why not? because noone knows what d.i.y is anymore. just like noone knows what punk is. punk's been beaten to a fucking pulp so menny times that it doesn't mean anything anymore. fallout boy is punk now. grrrrrrrrr! but anyway the kids today are stupid and will probly say "oh this band is d.i.y because they pretend to sing." i know it sounds dumb but i've heard dumber than that.

personally i feel that diy goes beyond the musical aspect and into "administration" for lack of better work. i.e. booking... you dont need someone to call venues and book shows for you. managers...well they know the guys working at the lables so of course getting a manager will get you sign so lets have him mail out the demos.

I pretty much think punk when I think DIY. Since it actually encompasses more than a genre, I don't see us adding it as a genre.

ah man! its so true.  people are running around calling fall out boy punk.  its the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard in my life.  i hate HATE fall out boy. and i know they are not punk, they are this cooked up alt pop rock piece of lame.

i don't listen to punk, or anything too heavy for that matter.  but i know a punk band when i hear one, and its nothing mainstream. i think thats the only thing keeping punk "punk" is that if your signed with a major lable, you lose the freedom to do whatever the fuck you want.  thus killing the punk aspect of the music. (i say all this will listening to ra ra riot - violens, cellos and all.)

what most kids don't understand is that mainstream music is calculated, well thought out, planned advertizing. its music marketed for every demographic business men can think of.  "oh look, the angsty whiney kids who aren't into heavy drug and alcohol use, but still hate mom and dad." then we get a tattoo clad, semi-straightedge whiney boy in tight pants and call it punk.

now, there are alot of indie bands, or bands under smaller labels that market the same way.  they become products.  not all of them start out that way, but with popularity, the evolve into this...company. and it taints the music, the raw feeling listeners get.

How old are you? Surely mother warned you not to play with strange grown men? Run along now, the sandpit awaits you.
