Is Indie mostly bad?

Is Indie music mostly synonomous for bad? There's plenty of bad artists in this world that would go the independent route because no music label in their right mind would sign them on. Of course there's the occasional jewel...

Is popular music synonymous with good?  It must be popular for a reason, right?

But...stupid as your question is, there are a lot of bad indie bands, I'll give you that.

However idiotic i find your question, I see little reason behind your confusion. While the independent music scene is open for low budget musicians and everybody else, wealthy record labels are riddled with horrid noise, and terrible 'lyrics' as much as they have brilliant musicians with amazing lyrics and music. The difference is expendable funds, not quality the  of music and lyrics.

I almost think the opposite. Indie music doesn't have to pass through a record label executive that basically will only produce what he thinks a mass audience will eat up. Therefore, the band can actually make the music they want to make, and not have to "dumb it down" in order to capture the mass audience. Which, admittedly, leads to some very bad bands, but it can also inspire more creativity than was ever possible under big labels.

For example, a big label in the 70's or 80's would never produce some of the bands today that have very different sounds from what was popular then, such as Animal Collective, or TV on the radio, because a big part of the audience would just reject it completley because it was so different from what they are used to. However, these are some of the more creative and great bands of today.

So say a new band with a strange new sound that was unlike anything thats around today came about. They could produce their record on an independent label, and get there music out there without having to pass through the "mass audience filter." Many people would reject them, because they were so different, but many people would really appreciate them, and their fanbase would grow, and they could make really great music, that without that indie label, may have never been produced at all.

i work for a music company where i come across many many indie bands daily.  i was a die hard blues fan, then all of a sudden i fell in love with all these indie groups.

i think indie is great, you just have to find the good ones.... just like any other genre of music.  i compare country to all being mostly bad.... but thats just my taste.  you on the other hand, may love country.  so it is all personal opinion.

just because you think most of it is bad, doesn't mean it is.  someone somewhere out there loves it.

Oh good god.

Being good has nothing to do with being signed. Being signed is about luck and how marketable you are.

Some indie music sucks, but there is a lot more room for new, different, or more provocative music in the independent industry than in the money machine of the major labels.

Indie music is like any other kind of music whether it be pop, rock, rap dance etc. There are good indie bands and there are crap indie bands in the same way that there are some good pop artists and some shitty ones. Wink

After you hear people say sorry for every little thing, or said quite simply to something terrible, yeah, it becomes an excuse because you're too lame or idiotic enough to not be able to think of something more meaningful. And by the way twatwaffle, that would be my signature, not my post. And you said I was stupid. Sheesh.

And by the way, "Don't be sorry, because sorry is just a sad excuse, and you ain't a sad excuse," was one of the most meaningful bits of advice that I've ever received. Not just because it is great advice, but because it came from a bum that helped me out.

No.  It's not "just one of those opinion things."  Words mean things.  And you are using them incorrectly.  But you clearly have so much confidence in yourself that you have no problem parading your wrongness.  Good for you.

Maybe you should take a look at it's figurative meaning, rather than it's literal meaning, and stop being such a right angle.

Oh look who wants to be figurative all the sudden.  Anyway, if you want to pretend your bum's advice is all poignant and meaningful, I don't give a fuck.  But stay off the "omg nuclearknife, your grammar is atrocious" bandwagon if you're so against right angles.  Twat.
