What is Indie?

Independent record companies are those that are not owned by one of the big four record and entertainment companies; Sony, Warner Bros, Universal and EMI.

An independent album is one that is released on an independent label, the opposite of a major label (owned by one of the big four).

Indie is used as an abbreviation of independent in any of the above contexts. An indie band is one that releases most of their albums on indie labels.

Indie music became an important counterculture in the eighties when the majors were reluctant to release (and fund) punk and new wave music that did not appear to have much commercial appeal. Indie labels sprang up and released music locally. What happened next was the music gradually got a larger audience and better distribution, and in the second half of the eighties the majors scrambled to sign indie bands (many by now playing "alternative" rock). At some point, the term indie began to be used figuratively to describe styles of music and bands that were reminiscent of eighties indie, whether the music in question was released by an independent label or not.

Nowadays "indie" is used to describe an absurdly wide range of music, and it has therefore become useless as a genre. When a metaphor begins to loose its grounding, it's about time to abandon it. "Indie" in the Forum title refers to music that is released independently: "Independent bands; the unsigned, the unheard, the great."

my personal view is that "indie" is a word with several meanings, not a word that is too broad though

As it is used in the context of this section, it means to not be on a major label. It can also be used to describe style and can be used broadly as a cultural term...basically meaning to be against the grain of mainstream style or precipitating mainstream style.

The word "indie" is a very broad word. Deal with it.

"That is a very indie sweater you are wearing."
"The restaraunt we've been going to on Main Street is kinda indie."
"My hipster brother drives me crazy, he's way too indie for his own good."

Indie as a music genre is one of the most vast ones i've ever come across. It's used to describe bands from At The Drive-In to Cursive to Bright Eyes to French Kicks. It's sort of gotten to where I just know something is part of the indie genre at this point.

Thank you. "Indie" isn't a sound or style of music--it just means your signed to an independent record label

Hey, the Irish dude Glen Hansard is Indie, by my standards. And Damien Rice is, pretty much, even though he got signed by Warner Bros...but anyway. Does anybody here listen to them!?? They are such geniuses and have a unique style =D
