ha

i was going to say green day, even though he said 'no bands on major labels' or something. but, yeah. i have at least three or so gd albums, but haven't listened to them for aeons because i think it was making me depressed...anyhoo. apparantly they have a new album coming out. that should be interesting. although i think that their old stuff is cooler than their last (american idiot), probably because of all that political shit. although i love the layout, like a 'punk-rock opera' and the whole story thing. but, i just love 'dookie' and how it's just all about billie's feelings and how everything is crap and how he makes his feelings seem insignificant, like he always took the piss out of himself, and the music is just great, it does somethin to me. the music is simple, but complex at the same time..

ah shit i'm going all mushy Smile

I'm not very knowledgeable on punk rock but Green Day and Blink 182 are pop punk and isn't indie punk sort of like saying blues rock? I thought independence was something these guys were aiming for..

Lat, i think you're rather optimistic expecting any kind of sense from people who wander in from the internet.

The first music they called "punk" was the aggressive, noisy form of garage rock played by bands such as The Stooges, MC5 and New York Dolls. But then the term got re-attached to a development of that pioneered in New York (i think) by a bunch of arty folk such as Patty Smith and Television and, a bit later, The Ramones. It was a more stripped down, poppier sound reminiscent of rock n roll and british invasion mod rock like early Kinks. Quickly caught on in Britain with bands such as Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Buzzcocks. Later it got harder again, but i don't know the details of all that jazz. Also it was embraced (and spearheaded) by a lot of very silly people wearing even sillier clothes. Some people think a torn shirt is a revolution. But let's stop there before i expose my prejudices.

And Greenday were hugely influenced by the early British exponents of the genre, such as The Clash and Buzzcocks. So they were certainly punk. But i don't think many of their albums were indie.

you mean it's not as dirty punk, so it appeals to the masses (pop) and therefore they were seen as sell-outs when they signed to a bigger label? but yeah...like they were seen as different and 'not punk enough' in their early days because they were into harmonizing and shit. and not just insane screaming and thrashing instruments

i should probably go and do something useful.

If you're replying to me, why not read what i wrote rather that just guessing what i mean? All i said was that most of their albums were not indie. I.e. they were released under contract to a major label. I don't even know if that's right, i've not listened to a Greenday album for years.

and azkm a torn shirt is not a revolution. i don't give a fuck how you're dressed. it's all bout the music and lyrics for me. i do not embrace the punk lifestile. it's more like i took it mutated it and developed my own version. all you fucks who conform to the punk lifestile are just that. conformests. i don't care how much i love your music. gg allin didn't conform. he had more punk in one cell then all of you new punks have in your hole body. stop trying to prove your punkness. real punks don't need to prove it. you can tell they are awesome. so reform yourselves into real punks.

I could be way off here, but seeing this discussion...

I thought punk was more like Say Anything, Thursday...ish?

And the "easy" definition for indie would be bands that not a lot of people know about.  So I was thinking more along the lines of You, Me, and Everyone We Know?
