The American rock band Styx reached prominence in the late 1970’s through the early 1980’s. It is still performing as of January 2013. Originating in Roseland, Rockford from 1977 through 1981, the band released four consecutive albums that earned multi-platinum recognition: The Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight, Cornerstone,and Paradise Theatre.
The band’s progressive rock style showcased ballads and hard rock guitar. Styx is best known for the hit songs "Lady" (1975), "Come Sail Away" (1977), "Babe" (1979), "The Best of Times" (1981), "Too Much Time on My Hands" (1981), and "Mr. Roboto" (1983).
2013 members include James "J.Y." Young (Original "Styx" Member) – lead and rhythm guitar, backing and lead vocals, additional keyboards (1970–1984, 1989–1992, 1995–present); Tommy Shaw – lead and rhythm guitar, lead and backing vocals, mandolin, autoharp, talk box (1976–1984, 1995–present); Todd Sucherman – drums, percussion, backing vocals (1995–present); Lawrence Gowan – lead and backing vocals, keyboards, additional guitar (1999–present); and Ricky Phillips – bass guitar, backing vocals, additional guitar (2003–present). James “J.Y.”
Young is the only remaining original Styx member. Former band members include Dennis DeYoung, John Panozzo, John "J.C." Curulewski and Glen Burtnik.
